China’s CDB Leasing Company took delivery of the first of an order for 30 E190s to be operated by China Southern Xinjiang, a subsidiary of China Southern Airlines, the nation’s largest air carrier. The fleet will be based in Urumqi in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region as part of a plan to build high frequency air service.
Xinjiang is often described as having “oasis” cities that are isolated with limited means to convey people and cargo between them. The E190s will help build connectivity within the region which borders eight countries including Russia and Kazakhstan. There are 15 regional airports in Xinjiang and another six are expected to be added in the next decade. Urumqi is already the fourth largest international airport in the country. With its fleet of E190s, China Southern is well-positioned to develop the economic potential of the region which is home to vast reserves of oil and gas. The Government of China has set a goal of building large- scale petrochemical production facilities which will serve to increase demand for air travel.
But China Southern’s E190s will not be used exclusively by business travelers. Xinjiang is also famous for its natural beauty and historic cities that attract large numbers of international tourists.
